What is Contoura BodyFx and MiniFx ?
Contoura BodyFx and MiniFx are noninvasive devices for killing fat tissue and tightening skin and is specifically designed to smooth out areas of cellulite. In studies, 30% of adipose (fat) cells to a depth of 2.5 cm were destroyed and this innovative technology also aided in building 13.7% new collagen in the area of treatment. New collagen deposition helps with the appearance of a more youthful, firmer, smoother and tighter skin appearance. Very few technologies, if any, have proven scientifically that they increase collagen deposition. Contoura is the only device of its class that has been able to scientifically prove significant collagen deposition in studies.
Contoura works by heating the adipose tissue and increases the metabolic rate, causing fat cells to shrink. Contour BodyFx combines radiofrequency (RF), a suction coupled vacuum and oscillating electrode pulses to induce fat cell death and it continues to work over time. There is a 40% reduction in fat thickness at 3 months in posttreatment studies. Mean abdominal volume loss post treatment was 202.4 and 428.5 cc at 1 and 3 month post treatment, respectively. The device has built in safety features to minimize complications and to maximize comfort. Specifically, for cellulite, skin is made smoother with less divots and bumps by decreasing the herniation of fat into the dermis, by flattening nodules and elevating pits and by reducing the vertical height of adipose tissue. This process remodels the skin to create a smoother and less bumpy-lumpy appearance, thus minimizing cellulite.
For the treatment of cellulite and loose skin, 2-5 sessions, one week apart is usually all that is needed to achieve a desired effect. If there is moderate to severe laxity in the skin, one session a week for 6-8 weeks will achieve a more desirable effect. With this loose type of skin, to further slowdown the ongoing skin aging process, one session every 1-3 months may be necessary. For the best treatment of cellulite and for skin tightening in larger areas such as the abdomen and legs, the BodyFx works wonders. For smaller areas such as the chin, neck, arms, elbows and inner knees, there is the MiniFx.

Tumescent Liposuction
What is Tumescent Liposuction?
Tumescent Liposuction, performed totally by tumescent local anesthesia is a distinct form of liposuction. Tumescent liposuction totally by local anesthesia has proven to be extremely safe. In fact, there have been no deaths reported in association with tumescent liposuction totally by local anesthesia. This form of liposuction is the standard of care for dermatologic surgeons in the USA and Canada. To the best of my knowledge there are no plastic surgery training programs or courses in North America that teach this form of liposuction. In fact, I would be surprised if more than a handful of the plastic surgeons in North American are experienced in performing tumescent liposuction without parenteral sedation or general anesthesia. It is different from liposuction performed under general anesthesia but has the same cosmetic effect and is much safer. The cannula’s used in tumescent liposuction are generally smaller resulting in less scarring and pain.

Is Tumescent Liposuction safe?
Liposuction under general anesthesia has a safety profile that is dramatically different than the safety of liposuction totally by local anesthesia. Virtually every liposuction-related death ever reported in the literature has been associated with general anesthesia or IV sedation. There have been several hundred such reported deaths. It is not surprising that surgeons who have been trained exclusively in this form of liposuction, and who have never observed any other form of liposuction, might not be aware of stark differences between these two dramatically different (homonymic) forms of liposuction.

OB/GYN is a surgical subspecialty. The American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery have guidelines for liposuction training and I have completely satisfied the suggested prerequisites for training and experience for doing liposuction totally by local anesthesia.
